The Habous district developed during the French protectorate1, mainly from the 1920s to the 1930s to accommodate several families of merchants from various regions of Morocco. This migratory movement is provoked by the policy of Marshal Lyautey who wants to separate the zones of residences of the Europeans and those of the Moroccans.
The name "Habous" refers to the traditional religious assembly which organizes the allocation of housing within the medina.
The plans of the district were conceived as early as 1917 by Albert Laprade, deputy of Henri Prost, then by Auguste Cadet and Edmond Brion. The neighborhood is built on land given by a certain Haim Bendahan to the Habous administration.
